Food For Parrots

If you intend to keep parrots as pets, this may be your first question. Before you check out the pet stores for parrot supplies, here are some useful tips on providing a well-balanced parrot food.

Parrots need healthy, nutritious diet to help them live long and healthy lives. A healthy diet also impacts your parrots’ behavior and their response to training. The good news is that preparing the right diet for your pet parrots is not that difficult.

Do not just feed your parrots bird seeds, thinking that they are hardy birds and can live on just that. Yes, parrots such as the Macaw and Cockatoo are hardy birds, but bird seeds do not contain enough vitamin A and calcium which they need. In fact, bird seeds have a high content of fat, which as we know it is not healthy. In any case, bird seeds should just form only 10 percent of your parrots’ diet. If you own other species of parrots that are big seed eaters such as budgies and cockatiels, than the bird seeds should form 25 percent of their overall diet.

Another popular choice among parrot owners is pellet food as they have a good source of nutrients. Pellets contain vegetables, grains, fruits, vitamins and minerals, and is a convenient all-in-one parrot food. However, feeding just pellet food everyday may bore your parrots. Pellet food should just make up about 50 to 60 percent of your parrots’ daily intake.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are important food elements for your parrots. Depending on the size of your parrots, cut the fruits and vegetables to chewable size for easy consumption. Hanging the fruits on the side of the bird cage is also a good idea as it is easier for the birds to eat them from there than from a plate or bowl. Examples of ideal fruits for parrots are papaya, kiwi, pineapple, mangoes and pomegranates. These are tropical fruits found in their natural habitat, and naturally suit their diet best. Ideal vegetables are carrots, green beans, corn, cauliflower, cucumber and eggplant. To add variety, you may want to include softer fruits such as oranges, bananas, peaches and apples to the diet. Avoid giving them avocado, guacamole, and mushrooms as these are toxic and may harm the birds.

Keep the diet with nature’s food and avoid giving your parrots processed foods that we humans eat, such as chocolate, candy and caffeine. Make sure that when children are around the parrots, they do not feed the birds with kid’s food such as marshmallows and jellybeans.

The state of your parrots’ health has a lot to do with the diet and nutrition they are getting. It is the parrot owner’s responsibility to provide a balanced diet to the birds. However, feeding your parrots and watching them enjoy delicious food is fun and satisfying and is one of the reasons why people keep parrots as pets.

Parrot Rescue Tips

All pet birds deserve quality care, love, and respect. They also believe there should be a place where bird owners can find the most current bird care information possible.

The pet parrot rescue in Michigan puts its mission statement to work in many ways. Usually this means parrot rescue on a small scale. Perhaps the biggest parrot rescue project in recent years was the one that followed Hurricane Katrina. KARE deployed rescuers to Baton Rouge, Louisiana in support of Hurricane Katrina’s bird victims, parrots or not. The parrot rescuers joined the huge animal rescue effort that was just getting underway. Pet parrot rescue in Michigan became pet parrot rescue in Louisiana.

How It Works

Pet parrot rescue in Michigan, KARE takes its name from the words Knapptime, Adoption, Rescue, and Education. Those three branches form the basis for any successful parrot rescue program.

1. Rescue: Parrot rescue always begins with rescuing pet parrots. This does not always mean rescue such as was needed after Hurricane Katrina. It may be as simple as accepting, from owners, pet parrots that are no longer wanted. Parrots can live for 50 years or more. Many owners do not think about that when purchasing a parrot. Some time later, as the owner’s life changes, he or she can no longer care for the parrot. In some cases, the owner dies, and the parrot is left behind. In other cases, the parrot becomes aggressive, and the owner no longer wants the pet. Parrot rescue accepts these parrots and cares for them.

2. Adoption: Parrot rescue involves finding new homes for parrots that have been rescued. This is easy with some parrots. They are well behaved, beautiful, and talkative. The adopting family can get a good pet for less than they would pay elsewhere. Finding homes for some rescued parrots is more difficult. The bird may need training to correct behavioral problems. It may have been neglected or abused. The parrot rescue group must evaluate the rescued parrots, and find appropriate homes. In some case, the best home must be a shelter or sanctuary, since it will never again do well in a pet situation.

3. Education: The third prong involved in parrot rescue is education. The pet parrot rescue in Michigan works to educate people who are interested in bird ownership. They want to help them learn the proper care of pet birds. This includes instruction before purchase about the bird’s expected life span. It includes information about proper feeding of parrots and how large a cage a parrot needs. Parrot rescue also should educate people about the options they have if they find they cannot keep a parrot.

If You Need Parrot Rescue

People who reach a point where they cannot keep a pet parrot should contact a place such as this pet parrot rescue in Michigan. Similar parrot rescue groups exist in a number of states.

The reasons for being unable to keep your parrot may be as simple as being unable to afford proper care for the bird. You may have insufficient finances to take the parrot to a veterinarian.

Some people cannot keep a parrot when they relocate overseas. Even relocation that involves a smaller home, or an apartment, may make it logistically impossible to keep the bird.

You could try to sell your parrot, and some people do. Prospective owners may be leery, though, of buying a parrot from a newspaper classified as. They may have heard of parrots that are sold because of aggression. Donating your pet parrot to a parrot rescue group will not give you money in return, but you will know that the parrot will be placed in the right permanent home.

Parrot rescue groups often have waiting lists of adoptive homes. They do everything they can to be sure the bird gets the best possible home.

Kudos for You

Parrot rescue groups often operate in the red. It is costly to care for a number of parrots and other birds. They require numerous cages, hundreds of pounds of food on a regular basis, and modest salaries for their workers.

You will be greatly appreciated when you donate, with your parrot, its cage, perches, playground, toys, and food.

One of the most important requirements to consider for your pet parrots, are choosing the best parrots cages. This is because your parrot will be spending a lot of time, eating, sleeping, and playing in it. Also from an owners point of view it will make sure a parrot won’t be roaming around the house making a mess and a nuisance of itself.

If you’re planning to purchase a parrot for a pet, you should acquaint yourself not solely with the different varieties of parrots but also the necessities the parrot requires in order to enjoy a healthy and long life.

Choosing Parrots Cages:

To make sure the parrot lives a comfortable life inside the four corners of your home it ought be supplied with the correct parrots cage. Because for many parrot owners selecting a parrot cage is one of the hardest things to do. This is because it is always difficult to determine which one is the best for a particular parrot type.

On the market today, parrots cages come in so many models, in almost all sizes, various shapes, and numerous styles to choose from. With all these selections, parrot owners especially those who are petting parrots for the first time will have difficulty in choosing.

Experts say that the most important thing that should be considered in choosing a cage for a parrot is the size. This is because it will determine if the parrot will be comfortable. Since parrots are very playful, it should always be remembered that the size of the cage should be of primary importance to ensure that the parrot will feel safe and happy.

Seasoned parrot owners and breeders agree that the ideal size for a parrots cage are the medium ones because they are roomy enough for the parrot to play. Of course, the size of the parrot itself should also be considered. (TIP: If possible, bring your parrot with you when choosing its cage. Ask the store owner if the parrot can try out the cage. If the parrot can extend both of its wings fully without touching any side of the cage, then it is the right size for it.)

<!--

Some of the other things to consider when choosing the best parrots cages are bar diameter, bar spacing, cage safety, doors, and the bottom great (for cleaning purposes).

Now you have bought a parrot you may be asking the question, what is the best parrots food for your new pet. At this point, you have probably realized that there is no single food that can be given to every bird, so now it’s time to do some research in order to find a good and balanced diet for your pet.

Buying Food With Low Sunflower Content:

Firstly, it is not really harmful to feed seeds to your pet, because they have a lot of nutritional content. However, parrots food with sunflower seeds in them are not good for your bird, because they contain lots of fats. Therefore, it would be best to purchase seed mixes with a low sunflower content, which will keep your parrot in good health.

Pellets are an excellent parrot food and are very often fed to pet parrots mainly because they contain a lot of minerals and vitamins which are good for the health of your pet and will ensure that he lives longer and remains energetic as to. These pellets usually do not contain much fat and by mixing them with fresh vegetables it creates a wonderful meal for your bird.

Of course, nothing quite beats fresh vegetables which are obviously the proper kind of parrot food and when mixed with pellets that contain plenty of vitamins, it will help in maintaining good health in your parrot. A parrots food helps to make the animal feel more energetic and there is also certain vibrancy in good parrot food that is not found in any other kind of food and that is why it is a good idea to feed fresh and finely chopped vegetables to your bird and to also mix some pellets with the cut vegetables.

In fact, when it concerns parrot bird food there are several options to choose from including special diets and also regular foods and in fact, there are even special bird foods for different types of parrots which means that you will need to choose those that are especially designed for the type of parrot that you own.

Okay, the feeding habits of a parrot are like those of a child, which usually means they won’t discriminate what parrots food they eat. So don’t make the mistake of thinking that these birds know which food is best for them, therefore, it’s best that you choose the correct parrot food from information you have researched from books and even the Internet. The rather than letting your pet feed on any food it can get a hold of. In conclusion, the right kind of parrots food is one that is well balanced and is specially formulated for your pet.

Question by clairercluck: can parrots and budgies live together and eat the same food?
i have a indian ring necked parrot /parakeet hes not too large in a massive cage and have been give n 2 budgie can they all live together in one cage ….and will they all eat the same types of food

Best answer:

Answer by grotonzoo
I wouldn’t put them in the same cage together without first seeing if they get along. Place their current cages right up against each other and see how they react to each other first. Go slow with this. As for the diet, each type of bird has dietary needs. Some of the food might be the same but I’m sure there are some foods that each will need individually. I would check with a vet or a knowledgeable pet store owner about these things.
