Food For Parrots

If you intend to keep parrots as pets, this may be your first question. Before you check out the pet stores for parrot supplies, here are some useful tips on providing a well-balanced parrot food.

Parrots need healthy, nutritious diet to help them live long and healthy lives. A healthy diet also impacts your parrots’ behavior and their response to training. The good news is that preparing the right diet for your pet parrots is not that difficult.

Do not just feed your parrots bird seeds, thinking that they are hardy birds and can live on just that. Yes, parrots such as the Macaw and Cockatoo are hardy birds, but bird seeds do not contain enough vitamin A and calcium which they need. In fact, bird seeds have a high content of fat, which as we know it is not healthy. In any case, bird seeds should just form only 10 percent of your parrots’ diet. If you own other species of parrots that are big seed eaters such as budgies and cockatiels, than the bird seeds should form 25 percent of their overall diet.

Another popular choice among parrot owners is pellet food as they have a good source of nutrients. Pellets contain vegetables, grains, fruits, vitamins and minerals, and is a convenient all-in-one parrot food. However, feeding just pellet food everyday may bore your parrots. Pellet food should just make up about 50 to 60 percent of your parrots’ daily intake.

Fresh fruits and vegetables are important food elements for your parrots. Depending on the size of your parrots, cut the fruits and vegetables to chewable size for easy consumption. Hanging the fruits on the side of the bird cage is also a good idea as it is easier for the birds to eat them from there than from a plate or bowl. Examples of ideal fruits for parrots are papaya, kiwi, pineapple, mangoes and pomegranates. These are tropical fruits found in their natural habitat, and naturally suit their diet best. Ideal vegetables are carrots, green beans, corn, cauliflower, cucumber and eggplant. To add variety, you may want to include softer fruits such as oranges, bananas, peaches and apples to the diet. Avoid giving them avocado, guacamole, and mushrooms as these are toxic and may harm the birds.

Keep the diet with nature’s food and avoid giving your parrots processed foods that we humans eat, such as chocolate, candy and caffeine. Make sure that when children are around the parrots, they do not feed the birds with kid’s food such as marshmallows and jellybeans.

The state of your parrots’ health has a lot to do with the diet and nutrition they are getting. It is the parrot owner’s responsibility to provide a balanced diet to the birds. However, feeding your parrots and watching them enjoy delicious food is fun and satisfying and is one of the reasons why people keep parrots as pets.

Parrot food should be limited to a solid-colored pellet, and should definitely not be focused on seeds. 4. SENEGAL PARROTS – Medium-sized specie good for apartments because of its more quiet behavior. Much adept in imitating sounds of surroundings than distinct speech of people. It is not recommended for outdoor and spacious free walks as it can fly farther and get lost.

5. PARROTLETS – Comes in tiny sizes, this specie have no problem with dark places, considered brave. The voice is quite small, best if you only tolerate chirping when bred in a small flat or room. Prone to accidents, they must be looked after all the time when out of the cage.

6. CANARIES – Specifically attributed to Canary Island, after Romans named it. Canaries have three types. Song Canaries are known for the distinctive voice and singing. Color Canaries have attractive and bright colors, making the collecting of several varieties popular to breeders. Canaries are territorial and not so sociable. From among the parrots, this specie has the sweetest voice.

Question by Dana: Lillac Crested Amazon Parrot for sale in southeast Kansas, but I do not know the birds value.?
I am prepared to sell our familys lillac crested amazon parrot, but I have no clue what the value of the bird might be. He is ‘middle aged’ for a parrot, somewhere in the mid- to late 40’s (average lifespan for an amazon is 90 years.) He is in apparant good health, and has been well cared for during his lifetime. We have had the bird for 11 years. He of course would be sold with his cage, toys, feeding trays and bottle, and a supply of food included. Any ideas what an appropriate selling price would be?

Someone in my area, is selling their “Lilac Crowned Amazon”. Not sure if that’s similar or the same as the Crested. Anyways, their asking price is 0.

Some Potential Parrot Problems

Are you thinking of keeping parrots?  Then there are a few possible potential parrot problems that you should take into consideration, this may include the pets you already own, the amount of space in the home, the amount of money you have available for your extra pet, will you have enough time to spend with your new friend, the number of children in your home, are you allowed to keep pets in your apartment, and lastly, the noise levels (parrots do make a lot of noise)

Keeping a Quaker parrot can be a fantastic experience, especially when they have learned to talk, because they are great mimics on talkers once they get started there will have you in fits of laughter, and you will be able to have conversations with them making them great company.

Parrot Problems In The Home:

1.. One of the first parrot problems that you will have to sort out is the other pets in your home and so, if you already have cats, then keeping parrots in the home would not be such a good idea, though a dog might actually enjoy the company of parrots.

2.. The second of the parrot problems but you will need to think about is the amount of space in your home, we should be large enough to accommodate a parrot and its cage. You may have to consider a large cage at his floor standing, if you’re considering large parrots, such as Macaws, Amazons, African greys and the Quaker parrot, however,  Amazons as well as African Grays and Quaker parrot , while the smaller varieties of parrots that would not require a large cage including Conures, Cockatiels and Parakeets.

Thirdly, you will have to make sure all the budget it off to spend on the upkeep and welfare of your parrots, and the amount you will have to pay to purchase it.  You can expect African greys and Cockatoos  to cost you between $2000 and $5000, Amazons will probably set you back between $1000 and $2000, so as you can see these birds are very expensive.

4.. Next, you have to make sure you have the time available to devote to your new pet parrot, which will  require a minimum of half an out the day to spend with it. Remember, parrots are very sociable creatures.
