Proudly owning parrots as pets is expanding swiftly in acclaim. Purchasing a parrot from a rescue organization or pet store is always an option. Nevertheless, when purchasing directly from a parrot breeder, there will be more likelihood to receive the parrot’s legitimate history, methods of care, and personality information. It is of the maximum importance that a lifelong parrot partner be chosen from reputable parrot breeders with a high standard of superior care, dedication to safety, and reliability.

Picking Your Parrot Breeder

When finding a parrot breeder, excellent of bird care is essential. Healthy and happy parrots depend greatly on the way they were raised. Depending on the breed of parrot, feeding methods will vary. Hand rearing or feeding while dealing with the baby parrots is one way that breeders can instruct early in the parrot’s life the importance of relating with humans. Breeders should begin to handle the responsibility of weaning baby parrots at 10-12 weeks of age by implementing into their diet a plethora of fresh fruits and vegetables, soft foods, pellets, and seeds.

Cage Care and Size

Cage care and size is also necessary to note. Parrot cages are the biggest on the market, and they should be. Parrot breeders should realize that parrots need to feel safe and at home in their cages. Some parrot owners prefer to clip the wings of their parrots to regulate their cage size or to make it easy for their parrots to roam free. A serious parrot breeder will know the importance of keeping their parrots safe in a cage while unattended, not limiting their wing development. A smart parrot breeder will know that baby parrots need to have time to fledge, allowing time for their feathers to grow. Parrot breeders will know that this is something that young parrots need to have to aid in their growth, balance, development and overall happiness.

Most parrot breeders are enjoying, patient, devoted bird owners. Having said that, there are some parrot owners who breed parrots for the sole purpose of making a profit. browsing potential parrot owners should do their research. Knowing what to look for in a parrot breeder will aid in discovering that special parrot companion. Parrot breeders should feel relaxed answering any and all questions that a future parrot owner would likely have. They should offer the chance to see the breeding facilities, aviaries, and parrot cages.

Picking a parrot as a pet is a great commitment. undertaking the mandatory research, knowing what to look for, and finding a creditable parrot breeder will certify that the purchase of a new parrot partner will be a fulfilling experience. Getting the right parrot breeder will allow the upcoming owner to feel assured in the fact that they are purchasing a happy, healthy well-adjusted feathered friend.

Parrot

The African Grey Parrot is the most beautiful of the parrot species. Originally from central Africa they are well known for their high talkative cognitive ability and their extensive intelligence. These magnificent parrots are able to develop such a wide and extensive vocabulary that they seem so human to their owners because of their great communication skills.

Trying to be supportive, and a smidge curious, I leaned over the cage and said hello to this bird. He stared at me. My husband fed him and gave him water, and we left him alone to settle in to our home. I awoke the next morning to a flutter of wings and my husband’s heavy footsteps in the hallway.

Owning such a parrot requires a long-term commitment since these birds can reach 60 years of age. Due to their great intelligence, African parrots will need an owner who has some experience and therefore will be better able to grasp their wants.

There are two main sub-species of the African Grey Parrot breed. Both sub-species make excellent pets, are considered a medium sized parrot (ranging 10-14 inches long), and live 60-80 years. When choosing a sub-species of the parrot, it really just comes down to personal preference. The first sub-species is the Timneh (“Tim-ney”) parrot.

It is essential to be very sure that African parrots as pets are really wanted as they can live up to 60 years. This is very important to African parrots. New parrot owners would be better suited to a different kind of parrot than the African parrots because of the behavioral needs. Boredom comes easily to these parrots and they will possibly tear things up in their boredom.

The life span of these parrots can be around 60 to 70 years. Owning one means lot of commitment. If you are interested in buying one then you need to research about it and get detailed information before you actually buy one. This will be very beneficial to understand the needs of the bird and you can take better care of it.

African Grey parrots are very intelligent. It has been said that they have an intellect similar to that of dolphins and chimpanzees. African Grey parrots have the ability to mimic up to 2,000 different sounds. They can understand the use of many words they learn, and are known to be the best talking parrots.

These parrots are relatively quiet birds with an average lifespan of 50 to 65 years living on a diet of fruits, nuts and vegetables. It is a good idea to socialize the birds with humans on a regular basis as they tend to be quiet if left alone and thus would only bond with their owners only.

The first one is to understand the role of the wilderness in helping the parrots grow and wean. It is vital for the breeder to be able to catch an African Grey with the best qualities that will help it become independent and develop its intelligence by providing them ideal environment to thrive.

The African Grey parrot is among the most gorgeous and easiest of the parrot family to keep. They originate from Central Africa and are known to be highly intelligent and exceptional talkers. African Greys communicate extremely clearly with their owners and can usually develop a good vocabulary.

Depending on the breed, some parrots can be identified as male or female by coloring or eye color, while other breeds will need to be DNA tested or surgically sexed.
Question by person: What is a cheap parrot breed that is also pretty easy to take care of?
Hi. =] I’m considering buying a parrot. I know they can be expensive, but I want to find one of the cheaper breeds. I’ve had some experience with birds, but not a lottt… So I’d also prefer one that wouldn’t be too difficult to take care of, but can be taught to speak at least a little. And I’m looking for one that’s medium, not like a parakeet or cockatiel [even though they're cute too. xP]
Any suggestions? Thanks. =D

I would reccomend a Sun Conure. If you buy directly from a local breeder as a baby then you can get it cheaper ($ 300-$ 500). You will also be able to tame it because it will imprint on you when you care for it (feeding,etc.).

Undoubtedly parrots benefit from the use of talking toys because it makes them feel so much closer to their owners when their owners are not around. The use of a talking toy helps the parrot feel that there is someone in the house all the time and when they hear your recorded voice they also feel much more at ease. This has such great benefits for a pet parrot.

Your own personal recordings on a talking toy will have absolutely huge benefits for the health and welfare of your pet parrot.

Parrots seem to love most types of toys, but talking toys are undoubtedly one of the best types that you could buy for your parrot, not just for its entertainment but because it also plays a vital role in its physical, emotional and behavioral adaptation into its captive surroundings.

It is a shame, but many parrot owners do not realize this and just consider it as a beautiful plumage that would make an interesting exhibit when visitors come to their home.

Just as we humans do, parrots experience a lot of emotional and physical emotions and are quite capable of feeling frustrated, lonely and bored. Boredom is a real problem for a pet parrot when the owners leave to go to work. A talking parrot toy can give the bird company inside its cage and can entertain it throughout the day.

Parrots do not like to be left alone and can always demand attention. Obviously, you will not be available every time it needs you, so a talking parrot toy can substitute for your company to a certain extent anyway.

Here are a few reasons why your parrot would enjoy a talking toy:

• Talking parrot toy – Frustration

A lonely parrot can easily become bored and this causes frustration which in the end shows as plucked feathers and a bad tempered parrot. Although, a cage for the parrot is its territory to sleep and eat in, it can also become a prison for it if it needs to spend most of the time inside it. A talking parrot toy can relieve it a lot by giving it companionship just like another real parrot.

• Talking parrot toy – Teaching A Parrot

If you own a parrot you might not always find time to spend with it teaching it to talk. This is where a talking parrot toy can come to your rescue and teach your pet how to talk. The biggest advantage of such a toy is that you can record in them whatever you need to teach your parrot and just play it on repeatedly until your parrot learns it.

• Talking parrot toy – Reducing Boredom

As said earlier parrots are attention seekers and the presence of another bird inside its cage gives it quite an inquisitiveness to explore it. A talking toy to a parrot can be a wonder, if it has not seen any other parrot. This can keep it entertained for a long time and bring its boredom to the curb.

A talking parrot toy has many very positive attributes that will help your parrot in its development, in its social skills, is temperament, physical exercise and other behaviors that occur from its emotional feelings. When a parrot can interact with toys they are using their cognitive skills as well as their intellectual ability and therefore will benefit in so many different ways. There is no mystery about the fact that “A happy parrot is a happy pet!”

Blue-crowned Hanging-Parrot
Loriculus galgulus
The great thing about keeping an African Grey parrot as a pet is that it can form a strong bond with you. Unlike a dog which can fetch a baseball, an African Grey can talk, well at least mimic the sounds you and others around you make, including the telephone and microwave oven.

Just like any other pet, this bird requires all the attention you can give to it. Spend some quality time feeding your bird and you will discover their amazing character and affection. Unlike a cat or a dog, an African Grey parrot can live as long as humans do, and some even outlived their owners. In that sense, it is a great companion to have.

Considering that this bird is going to live with you for a very long time, it will need a big and sturdy cage for comfort, with doors opening on the front and at the top. It will not be a problem to source for a suitable cage because pet shops carry a wide variety of cages for parrots. And with the internet so accessible to anyone, ordering a bird cage from a website is also a good option if there are no pet shops in your area.

Unlike other pet birds, this parrot needs stimulation. Get parrot toys so that your bird can amuse itself during the times you are not at home. The most common ones are plastic rings that you can hang from the top of the cage. They love to bite, climb and hang upside down on the rings.

The African Grey loves dry natural seed and nut mix. You should be able make this yourself with ingredients from the grocery store or supermarket if the pet store is too far away. Fresh cut fruits and vegetables like celery and asparagus are also good for the parrot for the vitamins that they provide.

This parrot likes to be spoken too, especially by its owner. But be careful with the vocabulary that you use because the bird is actually studying all the sounds that you make and registering it in its head. But one good idea is to let it speak your name, home address and telephone number. This is exactly what an owner did and when his African Grey flew away through an opened window, the person who found the parrot managed to return it because the bird kept on repeating its owner’s phone number.

1. Parrot Cage – BOTTOM

There is a plastic base with a wire grate in most parrot cages. The grate keeps the parrot from stepping into their droppings. Anyway some of the droppings stick to it. So it can be taken out right away. The grate can be used as a separator when two incompatible parrots must be in one parrot cage for a short time for example during transportation. Of course it can not be used for a long period.

By the time the material of the plastic base gets brittle because it becomes gradually worn by the sprinkled. Ask the shop where you have bought the parrot cage if they supply a replacement base after it breaks or when it is completely unusable. If the tray can be pulled out, it is more practical. It is better if you can clean the floor without setting the wire top aside. But also it is difficult to put only the top over the parrots if they do not want to return in the parrot cage.
2. Parrot Cage – LOCATION

Normally the stand which goes with the parrot cage is usually 50-60 cm. This is very low for observing the parrots, they have to be at eye level because it disturbs the birds if someone looks from above into the cage. If the parrot cage is hung on a wall, the bird is covered from one side. Avoid direct sunlight, close radiators and drafts. But have in mind that the room should receive sunlight once a day. Also because parrots should take part in family life, reserve several places for the parrot cage in the house. You will need two hooks fastened to the wall in the appropriate rooms, but not the kitchen and the bedroom. In this way the bird can be brought along and you will not worry that you parrot will damage something with its beak. If you have bought the parrot recently, a certain reticence in this respect is normally .But do not forget about the hygiene even when you become more intimate with the bird.
3. Parrot Cage Stand and Climbing Tree

To chain the parrot by one foot to the parrot stand all day long is against the proper treatment of the bird. The stand is to be used in addition to the parrot cage. The tray catches parrot droppings and other debris produced by it. Also the parrot cages should provide a climbing tree because a single perch offers only few climbing. The whole is set into an outdoor umbrella stand or a Christmas-tree stand. Trim branches to the desired size and then nail or screw them together. Brush them wet at first to avoid dust and insecticides which adhere to them. Check the leaves for “little beasties” which you do not want to have in the house. Arrange the branches so that the parrot does not expel its droppings to the lower ones but it is difficult, because they always hit something. You can buy an artificial climbing tree where this problem is already considered. A flat, ladderlike structure which is held vertical by a rectangular umbrella stand, has its advantages.
4. Bird Rooms

There should be sunlight and warmth in the room. Use”truelite” tubes during winter because the photoperiod should be at least twelve hours. “Truelite” tubes produce artificial but similar to natural daylight. Turn them on at 4:00 AM using a timer so that the twelve-hour “day” will end at the same time as sunset. At nights also the room should not be completely dark. Leave an 8-watt bulb switched on if there is no light from outside.

Set a grating into the window opening to get direct contact with the outside air into the parrot cage. On the other hand the grating will not allow parrots to get away. Choose the interior furnishings which will not injure the parrots. Enclose the heat source with a grating if there is a possibility that the parrots could burn their feet because of the high temperature. The walls should be with Resopal or roofer’s tin, with a washable paint like those in the bathrooms, with a coating of whitewash, without paper. Choose the material of the floor which is easy to clean. Caulk it and then cover it with sand.

A. We suggest a massive brick house for parrots , whose interior rooms are covered with 30 cm layer of unpolluted forest earth. On this layer there is a pile of tree roots , room-high tree trunks and rotted tree parts. It is good suggestion but not for everyone. Those owners who live in a rented dwelling will not use it. Bird rooms vary depending on different circumstances. These comments here are only examples and the same is with the next section on aviaries.

Top Quality Parrot Gymnasiums at ” Affordable ” prices! The Last Parrot Gym your bird will ever need! Your parrot gym will be individually hand-crafted and species specifically designed and computer balanced for your particular species (type) of parrot/s. Made to simulate the twisted vines and branches of the trees found in your parrot’s natural habitat, precisely ridged multidimensional footholds are circumfused and grafted into the base of the tree-top. The branches provide a slight and gentle bounce, and the multidimensional footholds will provide your parrot/s with optimal foot comfort and exercise. The grafted branches are ‘orthopedically designed and precisely ridged’ to ensure an easy grasp, as is shown in the video footage. No more having your feathered friends standing on damp wooden perches! Again, the perches on the Rhodesian Elm Tree are not made of natural wood… such as manzanita, which can be quite slippery… java trees, bottlebrush, or grapevine. The wood-grain appearence is created via the three stage molecular process, without the use of any dye, stains, or chemicals, and all materials used are 100% non-toxic. The branches have been ‘hand-grafted’ into irregularly shaped limbs in order to stimulate the muscles in your parrots’ feet, thereby preventing leg cramping and foot sores, which is a common ailment in captive parrots.

Parrot breeding is one of a million and interesting hobby that many people desire. Like me, I am a hobbyist whom I engaged in the field of birds that I really love and enjoy. I am very glad that in many years of trial and failure in the hobby that I choose which is breeding different kinds of bird. There are many things that I experienced and learned in breeding birds. There are two things that I encountered bad and good things. At first, entertaining is my target but in the days, weeks, months and years pass, there are many things that I discovered and make up in my mind that I really enjoy this kind of hobby. After that, it became business. Should I call it hobby or profession? Maybe I should call it profession because in my years of breeding birds I spent most of my time taking care of them, many nights I didn’t go to sleep to make sure of their safety, doing the night work looking for them time to time. Regular checking of the babies most especially when there are many chicks to feed. Way back in the beginning, I got a pair of parakeets that my mom gave to. I have no idea how to take care of those birds. Suddenly they died in some reason. I don’t know how they died and the cause of their death because I am not aware in caring them. I really love birds.

Parrots usually need toys most especially young parrots. In breeding parrots or keeping this intelligent bird you must know how to deal with them or how to bond with them. They need time to play just like our kids and they need to play not just for fun but they play for exercise. Birds also need exercise just like ours. To make them fit not to make them fat. Fat birds are easy to die and they are not reproductive in other way of saying they are not fit well. Like human being fat people prone to heart attack and high blood diseases. Some times fat people cannot produce babies same as in birds. That is why they need to play and exercise. They need toys and other things to play too.

There are many different types of bird toys that are easy to find in your local pet stores. If you are buying bird toys look for the toys that will fit to your bird. First step you have to do or know the kind of bird that you are keeping. This is very important in buying bird toys. You cannot give small toy to the big species of birds it is very hazardous to them is just because it is possible them to choke the small parts of the small toys. Same thing with the small birds they cannot enjoy the big toys because it is big. Maybe they cannot afford to gnaw it or they cannot even to move it because is it very big and heavy.

Secondly, choosing the right materials of bird toys is also important. Sharp pointed steel toys can harm your bird; small parts can also harm them if they swallow it, rusty materials can also cause of ill ness and sudden death, painted toys can also harm your birds and cause by death.

Parrot toys are easy to find in your local pet store or you can make by your own choice. Making Toys for them are full of enjoyment and in the same time exiting. Like me, I make my own toys for my birds. Yes it is possible, for small birds like parakeets or budgies you can offer them parakeet toys like shinny and bright things, bells, small wooden blocks, small wooden ladders, mirrors, or you can think any things that can catch their attention. In parrots you can offer a multiple layer wooden ladder, wooden blocks, they also love balls and bells. You can offer them wooden perch or twigs to play with and in the same time exercising their beaks. You can think more but be careful of the materials that you are choosing in making bird toys. Think first of their safety.

I am a hobbyist; Breeding Parakeets and Parrots are my favorite hobby. African Pet Parrots live for 50 to 70 years, which is almost equal to that of human beings. Just make sure you buy the right parrot cages for your pet.

The African Grey Parrot may even go on to outlive you; therefore, there is no need to shed tears anymore because your pet died. The African Parrot has been a favorite pet throughout the world since time immemorial. Rearing African Parrots is a full-fledged business in Africa, and businessmen there breed them specifically to sell these to buyers from across the world. But these parrots do require large and special parrot cages to keep them in.

Adaptable African Pet Parrots
The African Pet Parrot adapts to local conditions very quickly as it manages to fit perfectly almost anywhere in the world. Though common sense tells us that the African Parrot will not be the right choice in homes where there is too much open space or you have dogs and cats, or even children. The African Parrot is known for its friendly nature, which can be detrimental to the safety of young children.

The male Parrots tend to be larger in size with round eyes whereas females are smaller and have elliptical eyes. These parrots, however, come at a cost. You may have to pay anything in the range of 90 to 500 for the parrots. The parrot cages also need to be better, sturdier, and long lasting due to the longer life of African parrots.

African Grey Parrots
African Grey Parrots, however, are equally popular as pets though not very easy to own. Many people would suggest you to expect parrot’s behavior to be like that of dog or cat. These parrots can be very nervous when they enter your home and can develop behavior problems. They get stressed easily when they are meeting new people or other animals.

Keep Your Parrot Happy
It’s great if you can afford training from a parrot trainer, since the investment will be worth it. The African Grey Parrots are among the most intelligent, they respond very quickly when you interact with them and they can go on to become a great pet. You can keep your parrot happy and stress free with the help of toys, spacious parrot cages, and plenty of attention.

Clean Cages Regularly
You need to clean the parrot cages regularly, especially due to their irregular excretion. That’s why the cages need to be cleaned thoroughly with water so as to remove all the smell and kill bacteria from cages. African Grey Parrots have a habit of chewing almost anything. They enjoy chewing wood, clothes, curtains as well as many other things. We do not intend to discourage you, but you still need to be on the safer side while letting the parrot out of the cage.

Parrots Diet
The diet of African Grey Parrots should include calcium and vitamin A in adequate amount. Some of the examples of proper food for your parrot are fruit, seeds, peeled food, nuts, leafy greens, vegetables and cheese. If the parrot is being supplied adequate diet, you may not need supplements in that case. Make sure fresh water is always available for your parrot and the water supply needs to be changed regularly. Some people add supplements in the water also. When you are buying an African Grey Parrot, you need to keep in mind the environment it is going to live in. Your parrots should always feel safe within their living space. parrot cages for your African Grey Parrot come in all shapes, colors and sizes. Good parrot cages are expensive, but since African parrots may live for about 50 years, the investment might be worth it.

Shop and buy a small, medium, or large parrot cages for you pet African parrots and other pet birds. All types and sizes of parrot cages are available for your pet parrots. Please visit our site to view and buy appropriate cages for your pets – http://www.birdcagesrepublic.com/

Im planning on gettin an eclectus or an amazon parrot and was wondering if anyone had any tips on a good effective way on socializing the parrot with people. I know it takes a lot of time and patience but i am up for it, does anyone have suggestions or experiences on how to socialize one of these parrots?

Best answer:

Answer by tripleateam
Keep it Positive
The key to training your parrot is to keep the interaction positive. Three concepts provide the basis for parrot training:

1. Parrot does something good –> give a reward
2. Parrot does something undesirable –> ignore it
3. Never punish your parrot

Obviously, this is a bit simplistic, but your goal is to shape your bird’s behavior into what you want by a giving a reward for good things and ignoring (no reward, no reaction) for bad things.

The reward can be a favorite food treat, but simple praise or a play session with a treasured toy can be good motivation for some birds. If your bird is doing something undesirable, you must simply ignore the bird (your bird will not respond to punishment).

A negative reaction can turn into a reward if your bird is looking for attention (negative attention is better than no attention), so you must be careful not to unintentionally cause some undesirable behaviors to increase due to your reaction. Ignoring behavior might first cause it to intensify, but eventually the undesirable behavior will most likely stop.

How you approach training can help keep training positive:

* Train only when you are relaxed. Positive training does take patience!
* Pick a time when your bird is attentive and not distracted by eating, preening, or household activity.
* Frequent, but short, training sessions are generally more effective. A few minutes at a time, several times a day, works well.
* Pick a favorite reward (but don’t overdo it if it is food).
* Once your bird catches on to something, don’t give a treat every time (switch to praise part of the time) or your bird may only do the behavior if he/she knows you have a treat handy.
* End each session on a positive note. Wait for a successful attempt or at least a good try at whatever you are training, give a treat, and move on to something else.
* Keep training sessions upbeat and fun for your bird.

I love birds and parrots are wonderful pets. Good luck in your training!

In order to become a responsible parrot breeder, you will need to know about the job of parrot breeders. You may find breeding to be easy if you know a parrot breeder or even search the Internet for information. To find information that’s valid to teach you the right thing about parrot breeding is to find the best available EBook or books that pertain to information about parrot breeders.

The general information you will be searching for is the basic needs to get both females and males to breed. The male needs to like the female or vise versa. The birds will do their thing on their own when it comes time to mate and then the next thing you need to know is about nesting. Birds need to have their nest to lay their eggs in order to incubate them.

The next thing you should know is that when you incubate your own eggs, you need to know how to rotate the eggs and so forth. The process isn’t hard if you want to do this yourself as long as you keep up on the organization of the eggs. To find information for how to hatch parrot eggs, you need to ask a bird breeder or even check out the Internet for some information.

Now for those that have experience with breeding parrots, you should know what to look for when choosing a parrot. Picking the bird from a breeder is the hardest thing to do, because they all look good to your eyes. Not all bird breeders are bad because it takes a lot to breed. To choose your own breeders, you will need some experience with breeding them. There are plenty of beginners that’s out there that have problems with breeding and end up hurting the birds. You will find a lot of information on the Internet that can help you find the right information for breeding parrots.

To find the birds that’s going to give you the breeding you want is to find the healthy birds that haven’t been cross bred. That means they’re not related and have no blood ties between each other. The bird that’s being bred that’s in the same blood can cause birth defects and will cause false eggs.

The parrot breeders job can be a hard task if you don’t have the right information to get it right. It will take many years to establish your own way of breeding the type of bird you want. You will find it to be a good hobby and a job that can be fun. Please note that this should not be all about money, this should be about your love for the bird. If you are only in it for money, then you need to turn to something like freelance writing, webpage making or anything else.

Blue macaw parrot perched on bicycle handlebar, Key Biscayne, Florida

The living space you provide for your parrot is essential in keeping them happy and healthy. A parrot cage should provide a fun, spacious environment for your parrot and when incorporate alongside free-time in which they’re allowed to fly freely, there is no reason why your parrot won’t be happy parrot.

To ensure your parrot cage is completely appropriate for your parrot there are a few things you should take into account: Space – a parrot cage needs to have enough space for your parrot to have plenty of toys, perches and so on within it. In parrot cage terms; the bigger the better, it just depends on how much living space you yourself have.

Perches – make sure your parrot has several perches within their cage; these will sometimes come included within the cage or you could purchase a bird play stand or bird tree to place inside your parrot cage. Perches allow your bird exercise by flying from perch to perch ensuring they aren’t cramped up for too long in order to keep their joints healthy.

Toys – it’s important to include plenty of toys within the cage alongside the perches. You could almost think of your parrot as a child that needs stimulation and attention constantly, and the toys will provide this. Equally, the toys don’t have to cost you a fortune; simple things such as mirrors, rattles and so on are more than enough to keep your bird entertained. Ideas-4-Pets offer a fantastic solution in bird toy packs, which include a vast amount of different toys which allow you to vary the toys with the cage so your parrot is always entertained and doesn’t become bored of the same toys.

Choosing a suitable parrot cage for your parrot is the first step towards making sure that your parrot is going to be happy living with you. Ideas-4-Pets offer an extensive range of parrot cages for everyone’s needs and there is bound to be a cage that will fit in with your living accommodation.

Personality

Strangely enough for a bird who tends to have such a big tendency to be fearful and neurotic, the African Grey possesses the most stable temperament in the psittacide world. As much as he can prove to be rather unruly when he is young, further down the line when he reaches maturity hiss temperament becomes calm and thoughtful. In contrast to other parrots, the Grey does not have the inclination to change his personality or behavior during the mating season, which is in my opinion a very big point in his favor.

In that respect you’ll alos be glad to learn about the African Grey’s mating call, or rather the lack thereof. In fact, this parrot does not really have a recognizable mating call per se, which is good news for the heat of spring – when hormones are raging and most parrots are screaming. However sound-wise they can still drive you crazy: African Greys can make their imitation of the microwave oven beep or other electrical appliance every bit as maddening as a repetitive mating call!

Even though they are less popular, Timneh African parrots have a less sullen character than their Congo cousins. They tend to be less nervous and more rebellious, and also more inclined to do silly things to attract their audience’s attention or simply to have fun.

Behavior

The more intelligent an animal is, the more he is at risk of developing behavioral problems, and as you know, the African Grey is extremely intelligent! For example, only attention-hungry Cockatoos engage in more severe feather plucking than Greys do, so their sensitivity has to be taken into account to avoid similar excesses.

Due largely to his sensitive nature and to his impressive intelligence, the African Grey can react in a very negative way to a clumsy educator or to a coercing training session. This is why training African Greys should never imply forcing them to do what they do not want to, otherwise it is practically certain they will develop a phobic behavior.

Greys only learn through positive reinforcement, therefore educating a Grey should draw more from child pedagogy than from dog training principles.

Socialization

Socialization is a very important consideration when rehoming an African Grey parrot.

In your first days with an African Grey, he will start to weave a very strong link with his perceived partner (be it another bird or a human) and will become totally devoted to him or her. He can become possessive with the latter and aggressive towards their entourage, and even be jealous of his favorite human so much that he will reject all the other members of the family, including other pets.

A good socialization can prevent that problem. Greys are the most gregarious of all parrots and need to feel accepted as full members of their social group (or human family). On the contrary, lack of socialization in his early days could turn your feathered friend into a neurotic adult parrot.

In a word, even if you try to socialize your bird as much as you can (and you should), remember that as they are distrusting, shy and anxious by nature, Greys will not very sociable towards strangers, and in general will not get along with children.

The bottom line

In contrast to what is often heard, the African Grey is a very affectionate bird. In his early childhood, when your Grey has not yet developed a high level of mistrust, it is necessary to handle him often and to let him live safe “adventures”, like seeing different places in the house, or meeting different people and realizing they’re not a threat. Teaching him early on that biting is not a means to communicate will also help. After this stage, your Grey will become a lot more ready to accept new humans and new objects in his familiar environment.

Question by Bbro55: How can I teach my African Grey Parrot not to drop seeds that I hand feed to him?
I am trying to teach my african grey parrot to eat the foods that I give to him by hand. But every time I give him like, an almond for example, he takes it from me and rubs his tongue along it, then just drops it. Actually, now he just takes it and drops it without doing anything else. Does anybody have a solution of how I can fix this? (Nothing related to starving him please)
thanks for the advice

Answer by M2MM
Greys are very intelligent, and I believe yours is saying “no, thank you.” Put his food in a bowl, but not too much at one time, and leave him to it. He will feed himself. If you are trying to get him interested in a treat, find a treat he really likes (usually the first thing eaten) and withhold it for his treat. Keep in mind, when he’s not hungry, even his favourite treat won’t interest him.

My Grey only drop nuts that I hand him when he’s not interested, otherwise he “hoovers” them up.
